The Saint

El Santo was the ring name of Rodolfo Guzmán Huerta, one of the great icons of Mexican professional wrestling. His masked persona emerged in 1942, when he adopted the identity of “El Santo, the Silver-Masked One,” and he went on to become a central figure in lucha libre. In his early career he worked in the EMLL circuit and took part in memorable bouts and phases in historic venues such as Arena México and Arena Coliseo. Among his best-known achievements are his long run as a leading babyface, his legendary partnership with Gory Guerrero as “La Pareja Atómica,” and his victories in apuestas matches and rivalries against opponents such as Tarzán López. He also became a major film and comic-book star, which expanded his fame far beyond the ring. His retirement in 1982 and his death in 1984 are both documented.
